Get Up and Move! Sitting Raises Health Risks

Office chairAnother big study has found that sitting for long periods of the day increases your relative risk for type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease by over 100% And, once again, they found this effect regardless of whether you get the recommended amount of moderate intensity or vigorous intensity exercise each week. Going out for a brisk walk or jog before or after work may help keep off pounds, but if you don't break up your sitting periods, you are doomed. Well, maybe not doomed, but your risks are still high. Health Risks of Sitting Still

What are those of us who are well-paid to sit supposed to do? You can lobby your boss for a standing desk or height-adjustable desk, or even a treadmill desk. You can set screen alerts to get up and move around or stand for two minutes each half hour. You can make a habit of standing up to take any phone calls. Or, in the case of many of us, stand up whenever you are going to send a text message. At home, don't plop down in front of the computer or TV, but engage in active gaming that gets you on your feet. I've taken to doing Zumba dancing along with the musical numbers in Glee. That works for Dancing with the Stars and other such shows.
