When Do You Exercise?
Autumn arrives this weekend, with the days getting shorter and dark coming earlier. Is there a best time of day to walk? Some research shows that afternoon is the best time for exercise performance, but other studies show people stick with exercise better if they do it in the morning. How about you?

Zombies...The Walking Dead are Marching
I changed my walking plans when I saw the Portland Zombie Walk was being held this weekend. Even a steady Oregon rain didn't deter me. I had to do my bit to prepare myself to survive the Zombie Apocalypse by more exposure to zombies. Hundreds of zombies were lurching around and moaning, and not just because it was only 10 am and they hadn't had enough coffee yet. They ate Voodoo Doughnuts while preparing to go on their one-mile hunt for fresh brains.

If you're bringing along a rarely-walking friend, point them to my once-a-year-walker's survival tips. New Balance is showing their support for Komen for the Cure by strutting the runway with the Jacqueline Quinn-designed dress made from the New Balance 860v2 shoe, the Official Walking Shoe of the Susan G. Get Up and Move! Sitting Raises Health Risks
What are those of us who are well-paid to sit supposed to do? You can lobby your boss for a standing desk or height-adjustable desk, or even a treadmill desk. You can set screen alerts to get up and move around or stand for two minutes each half hour. You can make a habit of standing up to take any phone calls. Or, in the case of many of us, stand up whenever you are going to send a text message. At home, don't plop down in front of the computer or TV, but engage in active gaming that gets you on your feet. I've taken to doing Zumba dancing along with the musical numbers in Glee. That works for Dancing with the Stars and other such shows.

The Week Before Your Marathon or Half Marathon
If your race is next weekend, what do you do throughout the week? Your long mileage is done, and throughout the week it is good to get in 30-minute to 60-minute walks each day, but no hard training. But beyond the training, you need to pay attention to what you eat and drink and plan for a good night's sleep each night. Most of all, you need to get your gear all ready, clean and packed (if traveling) or laid out (if you're dong a local race.)

Fit But Fat? The Fitness Counts
Is there such a thing as being both fit and fat and having the same lower health risks as ideal weight individuals? A new study of over 43,000 people found that there is a "fit obese" type of person, and they are at no greater risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer or all-cause mortality than similarly fit normal weight people. They had substantially reduced risks from non-fit obese people -- 30% to 50% less risk of those major death risks than non-fit obese people.

40 Pounds Down - and the Walking is Easy
This morning the scale confirmed that I am 40 pounds lighter than I was at the end of December. I started 2012 with arthritis pain in my knee and too embarrassed to allow photos. My walking speed was too slow to raise my heart rate to a moderate-intensity level. Something had to give. I started a 1200-calorie diet and logging my food on our free CalorieCount.about.com site. My weight has gone downhill ever since. By April, my knee arthritis pain was gone.

Drop the Sudoku Puzzle and Get Walking for Aging Brain Health
Drat, I thought I could use brain health as my excuse for my addiction to Sudoku and other puzzles. No, a study of people in their 70's found that walking several times a week and other physical activity is what kept their brain young. Engaging in mentally and socially stimulating activities didn't show any effect. At least for the Scottish 73-year olds in the study, "I would walk 500 miles" is the right tune to prevent brain shrinkage.

October Walking: Enjoy Volkssport Walks
My main walking activity is participating in volkssport walks. The word may sound funny to you, but the walking is great. Volkssport isn't a technique - it means walking at a pace you enjoy, with no special form or gear. Most events include a 6 mile (10 kilometer) route and shorter options. October is National Volkssport Month in the USA. What is it about?

Comfort Shoes to Cuddle Your Feet
I have lists of the best shoes for your walking workouts, but what should you wear for work, office, or school? The shoes you wear for everyday activity are as important as your walking workout shoes. Don't wait till you have foot pain before deciding on comfort vs. fashion. I've used my own experience and the approval of the American Podiatric Medical Association to list the best comfort shoes to wear for everyday.

Don't Make This Race Mistake
Pat stopped by my office yesterday proudly wearing his Portland Marathon finisher medal and had a confession of a serious race mistake. He didn't read the instructions correctly and instead of putting the timing tag on his shoe, he put the timing tag instructions on his shoe (pictured). Race timing tags come in all shapes and sizes nowadays and that's an easy mistake to make, even for a veteran like Pat. He might have avoided it following my race day prep tips. Poor Pat finished with no official time and no announcement of his name at the finish line.
