It never occurred to me that one person could be responsible for putting treadmills into homes and fitness centers worldwide. But William Staub was that guy. He took the contraption mostly used for medical research and testing and developed it for home use so you could hang clothes on it and feel guilty. But his intent was that you could get the recommended amount of aerobic exercise each day without excuses. He wasn't an exerciser himself until he read Dr. Kenneth Cooper's book "Aerobics" in 1968. That inspired him to start getting in an eight-minute run five times a week, and developing an affordable home treadmill. His company, Aerobics, Inc., produced the PaceMaster treadmill for decades. He was seen on the treadmill as recently as two months ago and passed on last week at age 96.
