Which works better - giving an older low-activity person a pedometer with a step count goal, or giving them a prescribed amount of minutes to walk per day? I'm not surprised that an Australian study found that the pedometer was twice as effective. In their study, participants increased their walking by almost 50 minutes a week if they got the pedometer, and 28 minutes with just the time goal. Both groups saw an improvement in blood pressure. Not surprisingly, they didn't lose weight. That small amount of activity is a step in the right direction, but 60 minutes per day is what is recommended for weight loss.

Four studies presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference this week point to the benefits of exercise in maintaining memory function. One exciting study prescribed a moderately intense walking program and compared it with a stretching-toning exercise program. The subjects were older, sedentary adults who had no signs of dementia. The walking group had a 2% growth in the hippocampus -- a brain structure associated with memory, and an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). "Our findings suggest that the aging brain remains modifiable, and that sedentary older adults can benefit from starting a moderate walking regimen," said researcher Kirk Erickson, PhD. The stretching-toning group did not see similar benefits.
