Protect Yourself from West Nile Virus When Walking

Cutter Advanced Insect RepellentWest Nile Virus is back in the news, with 48 states reporting a total of 1590 human cases and 66 deaths for 2012 as of August 28, according to the CDC. That's up 40% in a week. The virus is spread by mosquito bites, and as an outdoors walker that is a concern. Mosquitoes love me, so I keep insect repellent handy if I'm going to be walking in an area where I'm likely to get bitten. I've switched from DEET-based sprays to picaridin-based spray. It is almost as effective, yet is odorless and non-greasy. High concentrations of DEET can also eat through some fabrics, whereas picaridin does not.
