Energy Bars - Holiday Flavors and Gluten Free Bar

Clif Bar Seasonal Holiday FlavorsBy now the Halloween candy should be gone, so no more using Fun Size Snickers as energy bars. Keep up your workouts and sign up for a local Turkey Trot or holiday charity walk/run. Clif has its holiday flavors out for their energy bars. This year they are Spiced Pumpkin Pie, Iced Gingerbread, and Peppermint Stick. (Compare Prices)  My walking buddies and I have been Clif bar fans for many years. They have the right consistency to pack along and eat with melting coatings and crumbles, and they are made with understandable natural ingredients. But best of all, they taste great.

Zombies...The Walking Dead are Marching

Zombies at a Zombie WalkI changed my walking plans when I saw the Portland Zombie Walk was being held this weekend. Even a steady Oregon rain didn't deter me. I had to do my bit to prepare myself to survive the Zombie Apocalypse by more exposure to zombies. Hundreds of zombies were lurching around and moaning, and not just because it was only 10 am and they hadn't had enough coffee yet. They ate Voodoo Doughnuts while preparing to go on their one-mile hunt for fresh brains.

Is "The Biggest Loser" a Turnoff to Exercise?

I have walking buddies who love The Biggest Loser. A study by the University of Alberta found that the depiction of extreme exercise sessions on The Biggest Loser left people of all body sizes with a negative attitude toward exercise. Who wouldn't be left with a negative attitude watching people grimacing, crying, throwing up? What's fun about that kind of exercise?

I love walking because it is usually a pleasurable experience once I actually get out the door. I see new things, I get my blood moving. I clear my head, listen to music or podcasts, or chat with my walking buddies. I have a blast with Zumba dancing for higher intensity exercise. I enjoy doing an upper body routine with dumbbells -- short and sweet. I don't do exercise that is unpleasant. If I thought you had to have pain and suffering to burn off calories, I wouldn't do it.

"No Pain, No Gain" was a particularly bad slogan from past decades. Yes, you need to challenge yourself to get to new fitness levels. But you can do that with steady increases in intensity, not with extreme workouts that might leave you injured. Do too much and you set yourself up for weekend warrior injuries. Then you are back to square one, having to recover from your sports injury.

I've been on a journey back from putting on excess pounds and developing knee arthritis pain. I've steadily lost the weight, regained my walking speed, and am pain-free. I did it without extreme workouts. I used brisk walks on my breaks throughout the day, long distance training on the weekends, Zumba and other fun exercise. I also used a reasonable 1200-calorie diet five days per week. It's a sustainable lifestyle. Find the exercise you enjoy doing and do that. Don't fall into the Biggest Loser trap.

Walker-Unfriendly Race Experience

Run Like Hell Starting LineI wanted to walk an October half marathon. The Run Like Hell half marathon had a time limit of 3 hours, 30 minutes, which I could make with 16-minute miles. They encourage racing in a costume and it sounded like a blast. I timed myself the weekends before to be sure I was up to speed. I checked the final race instructions and took a glance at the race map online. Because I was going to be near the time limit, I wore my Camelbak Marathoner hydration vest and packed my own Clif bar snack, in case the water stations were closed up when I came through. While they started off being walker-friendly by greeting us as "runners and walkers," things swiftly went downhill.

Where to Hike NOW in Kananaskis Country

Jumpingpound Ridge Here’s one of the Canadian Rockies’ easiest, most convenient trails: a blessedly undemanding, scenically captivating, foothill ridgewalk usually available by June. You’ll begin hiking after a mere one-hour drive from Calgary. The path quickly lofts you above treeline, where constant scenery will pull you onward. Jumpingpound is popular with mountainbikers, but hiking is [...]

My Favorite Walking Things of 2012

Nike+ FuelBandI've had an excellent walking year. Here are the things that helped me the most.

Nike+ Fuelband: I snagged one when they first debuted, and since the day I snapped it on my wrist, I doubled my steps per day, every day. Even on the gloomiest, lowest-energy days, I put in the steps it takes to make my NikeFuel goal. I walked a lot of hallways, and circled the work campus at least 500 times, just to see the NikeFuel guy do his happy dance each day when I reach my goal. (Compare Prices)
